This week, meet Katie. She's the founder of Style Your Spaces, an Edinburgh-based creative studio that specialises in imaginative interior design, sustainable floristry practices and a carefully curated homeware collection.

Earlier this year, Katie opened her first bricks-and-mortar store in our neighbourhood. We met her there to discuss how we can shop more sustainably for our homes, bonding over our shared vision to support small makers.

"Shop from smaller, independent shops who work hand-in-hand with the designers and makers who produce their stock."

Style Your Spaces offers a selection of unique, beautiful pieces for the home. What is your favourite home accessory?

My favourite piece in our shop at the moment is our Frilly Harlequin Vase. Designed in collaboration with talented ceramicist Paige Mitchell, these beautiful dark green painted vases are handmade by Paige in her Norwich studio and made exclusively for Style Your Spaces. They’re the perfect vase for all year round- fill with hydrangea heads in summer, dahlias in Autumn or gorgeous parrot tulips in the spring. Lovely in the kitchen, on a coffee table or next to your bed.

Over-consumption is something we're rebutting in fashion, but how can our audience shop more sustainably for the home? Do you have any tips for making more mindful, long-term purchases?

Make considered purchases! Shop from smaller, independent shops who work hand-in-hand with the designers and makers who produce their stock. Don't be afraid to buy secondhand when it comes to homewares and furniture; there are some great Instagram sellers and e-commerce websites that offer treasured vintage pieces or one-off antiques. It's a more sustainable way to shop and way more interesting than the pieces you’d find on the high street! We sell antiques and vintage accessories too. Find our latest stock here.

In addition to your own designs, Style Your Spaces also sells wares by various small brands. How important is it to support local makers?

So unbelievably important. By stocking local makers, it helps not only to raise awareness of their brand and beautiful work but also to hold a local community together by supporting them financially. It's more crucial now than ever before. We stock over 50 small local brands and makers in a carefully considered collection. We like introducing our audience to brands they might not come across otherwise!
