Meet Martin Safro: Edinburgh-based photographer prioritises comfort from his clothes

This week, meet Martin. He's an Edinburgh-based photographer who specialises in lifestyle, interiors, food and travel photography.

We accompanied him on an off-duty day as he worked on a personal project, documenting the nature in Holyrood Park.

“I think it’s so important to bring more nature into our lives. Whether it is potted plants around your home, a stone in your favourite jewellery piece or organic fibres against your skin.”

To what extent does your job influence your outfit choices?

I definitely dress differently on and off duty. My job has influenced the way that I dress from a practical point-of-view. I started wearing vests just to have extra pockets on my person (everything I need is very pocket-hungry: lens caps, batteries and so on).

When I’m in the middle of a photoshoot, I’m making so many technical and creative micro-decisions. The last thing I need to worry about is if my collar is sitting right or if my shoes are digging in. I move a lot whilst shooting so I rely on comfortable, breathable basics to see me through a demanding photoshoot.

What's your favourite material to wear?

I love all natural materials. I’m a self-confessed hippie. I think it’s so important to bring more nature into our lives. Whether it is potted plants around your home, a stone in your favourite jewellery piece or organic fibres against your skin. Yes to all of it!

I also love repurpose materials made from organic matter or plastic waste.

As a photographer, do you often lean towards dark and neutral shades?

Yes, absolutely! You don’t want saturated colours to reflect onto your subject so I tend to stick with dark and neutral shades whilst shooting.

Off duty, you’ll find me wearing colour and pattern. That’s where the flavour is!

What projects are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working on a personal project focusing on the nature in Holyrood Park. Living close by, I spend a lot of time here. I would love to create a larger body of work focusing on Scottish wildlife more widely.
