A trip to Edinburgh is incomplete without a whistle-stop tour of the varied independents who, like us, call St Stephen Street home. With our prominent storefront beside the old Stockbridge Market arch, and a brand new office space just across the road (more on this soon!), we’re proud to have planted roots in this small but mighty stretch of street.
But it wouldn’t feel like home without our ever-supportive neighbours; some of the most thoughtful retail spaces in the capital – and the UK. Here’s some new additions we’ve been frequenting, along with the landmark shopping haunts we’ll never tire of.
Aetla
St Stephen Street’s most recent addition, Aetla is an artfully curated space offering high-end fine jewellery. From Wwake’s opal pieces to Alice Waese’s sculptural hoops and signet rings, the exquisite selection of sustainable Scottish and international design is a visual feast. Like treen, Aetla once held a pop-up at Space at Seventeen, so we’re delighted to welcome it as a more permanent fixture just across from us.
The Method
We owe a lot to The Method. Owners Dan and Jodie have been supportive of our journey since the beginning, setting the tone for the kind of store we wanted to run. Inside (and online) you’ll find an edit of eco-friendly skincare and lifestyle brands. Attention to design is evident in every corner of this space, from the floating wooden shelving to the methodically curated displays. Method’s own wellness line, MODM, is a treen favourite and available in boutiques across the UK.
Golden Hare Books
A haven of classic literature, contemporary non-fiction and beautiful coffee table volumes, Golden Hare is a book lovers paradise. The knowledgeable team encourages browsing and is always on hand to offer personal recommendations and expert insights. Not in Edinburgh? You can still enjoy Golden Hare’s unique approach to bookselling by signing yourself, or a loved one, up to their PostBooks reading subscription.
Jorum Studio
We first met Jorum back in our Custom Lane days when they were our pop-up stall neighbours. Our retail paths have serendipitously realigned and we’re now just a stone's throw away from the bespoke perfumery. Unusual scents, apothecary-style packaging and made-in-Scotland credentials set this space apart – not to mention the friendly staff who can tell you everything there is to know about the product you’ve fallen in love with.
If you’ve got any shopping energy left, Space at Seventeen’s current resident Druid is worth visiting for its hand-poured natural candles. Time allowing, put your feet up at The Last Word Saloon, Stockbridge’s cosiest drinking nook, while a vegan bagel from Bross, wholesome mac and cheese from Grams, or a Fortitude coffee and cake combo will leave you feeling sated in between stops.
