Packing guide: how to achieve the perfect getaway wardrobe

Our mindful approach to holiday dressing.

You’ve saved up those vacation days, dipped into your travel fund and you’re finally boarding a flight to a bucket-list location. But how do you ensure your holiday style matches your mood board?

In our busy, work-driven world, time away from the laptop, daily responsibilities and unpredictable UK weather is precious. That’s why we’re all about making those off-duty hours as smooth and stress-free as possible. By planning your outfits in advance, you can eliminate all tricky decisions and focus on relaxation from the moment you touch down.

Streamline your favourites

Start by pulling pieces that you definitely want to bring. The outfits you imagined when booking might feel different when you see them in the mirror. Don’t just try on the main components – include every element, right down to the jewellery, to get a complete picture. Take a quick photo and move on to the next outfit. Repeat until you’ve reviewed all your options, then scroll through the selection and narrow it down.

Take a capsule approach

Ideally, there will be some overlap in the outfits you style – if you’re a proud owner of a capsule wardrobe, this part should be simple. You want to choose bottoms that will work with multiple tops, and vice versa. Tempted to stash five different shoe options in your suitcase for a three-day getaway? We don’t need to tell you that’s not the best use of your carry-on space; instead, select a pair you know is comfortable, versatile and easy to take from day to night.

Set an hour (or two) aside

For many of us, packing often gets pushed to the eleventh hour, squeezed into those late-night moments when you should be catching some pre-flight sleep. It doesn’t matter when you get to it – you can snooze on the plane! – but make sure you dedicate at least an hour to filling your suitcase with items you know you’ll wear. That being said, assess any obvious gaps ahead of time to avoid last-minute dashes to the high street.

Perfect your travel look

Make sure you’ve got your travel outfit down, sticking to light and breathable layers that can handle changing temperatures. If your accommodation offers laundry facilities, consider wearing the same look on both ends of your journey. This way, you’ll feel fresh and comfortable from start to finish.

Leave space for something special

The benefit of mindful packing is it allows for some holiday shopping. We’re not talking about flashy souvenirs and impulse buys, but visiting one-of-a-kind boutiques and vintage markets is part of the travel experience, and you might just fall in love with something.

Need a more detailed breakdown of what to pack? Consider the following formulas for a weekend, week and two-week-long holiday.

For a weekend: 2 tops + 2 bottoms + 1 one-piece (dress, jumpsuit or co-ord) + 2 shoes (one casual, one dressy) + 2 bags + 3 pieces of jewellery

For a week: 5 tops + 3 bottoms + 1 one-piece + 2 swimsuits + 3 shoes + 3 bags + 5 pieces of jewellery

For two weeks: 7 tops + 4 bottoms + 2 one-pieces + 3 swimsuits + 4 shoes + 4 bags + 8 pieces of jewellery

After one week, consider washing the items you’ve reached most often in the hotel (if they offer this service) or at a local dry cleaner.
