What to wear: 3 days in the countryside

5 outfits from a spring weekend at Glen Dye Cabins & Cottages

A weekend away in the Scottish countryside calls for comfort, layering, and pieces that can be worn more than once. Recently, I spent a few days at the beautiful Glen Dye Cabins & Cottages — walking through the woods, lounging by the fire, making wreaths, and eating very well. They also have their own line of clothing and homeware, Gladstone Hellen, made in Britain. I got to see (and try on, of course) a few pieces during the stay and highly recommend a browse while you're there. This is what I packed (and re-wore), styled from our spring/summer collection at treen.

I also brought my trusty compact hand steamer to freshen up anything I re-wore and ease out creases from travel — a packing essential I never go without.

Each look can be recreated with pieces you already own, or explore via our edit in-store and online. Here’s everything I wore, from early morning yoga to a three-course dinner.

Look 1: The travel look

Whether you're heading to Glen Dye or somewhere else remote and lovely, layering is key. I travelled in wide-leg jeans and a fitted striped tank, with a slouchy knit cardigan for warmth and a lightweight jacket over the top. Finished with easy slip-on shoes and the jewellery I wore all weekend long.

I always bring my trusty compact hand steamer — perfect for freshening up travel-creased clothes and rewearing pieces comfortably.

Look 2: Lunch in the garden camp

An easy but elevated daytime look. Think breathable cotton or linen, loose-fit trousers or a co-ord, and sandals or slip-ons. A sun hat and simple accessories tie everything together — perfect for a lazy lunch by the fire pit or a garden bench nap.

Look 3: Drinks + dinner at The Woodshed

At Glen Dye, there’s a little venue called the Woodshed where guests can play records, have a drink and wind down (or up). Dinner was hearty and homemade — and called for something a touch more styled.

I wore a black linen maxi skirt with that same soft cardigan from day one, paired with mesh Mary-Jane flats and a raffia bag. A lightweight jacket came along just in case, but mostly stayed draped over a chair. It’s the kind of look that works for casual drinks or a proper meal — just enough polish, no effort needed.

Look 4: Early morning yoga

Waking up to birdsong and misty trees = the perfect excuse to roll out a mat. Soft activewear makes all the difference here — I wore a matching ribbed legging and top set (made from recycled plastic bottles), layered under an oversized tee for warmth. A cap and a mug of coffee made it a full look.

Look 5: Floral wreath workshop

One of my favourite moments of the trip was a foraged floral wreath workshop. I wore wide-leg linen trousers, a Breton stripe top and a cotton knit — all in natural tones, soft enough to wear all day. Comfortable shoes were a must, and this look is one I’d easily wear again for travel, errands, or switching to a smarter shoe for dinner.

Planning your own countryside weekend?

A countryside capsule should be wearable, repeatable, and you. I loved reworking core pieces in new ways, mixing up accessories and layering to suit whatever the day brought — from muddy woodland walks to dressed-up dinners.
