As an industry, fashion is not typically known for its kindness. Instead, our minds jump to images of workers protesting for better conditions, the catastrophic effects of fast fashion on both our environment and global culture, not to mention the harsh reality of building a career within the industry and the challenges that many individuals face with body image and mental health.
But today the journey of fashion is changing gear, with the voice of a global revolution that seeks to shape this once toxic industry into one that propounds kindness to ourselves and our planet.
We want to be part of that voice in whatever way we can, here are three ways we believe the industry can be known for its kindness. We hope this gives you some food for thought.
Research
When it comes to making kinder fashion choices, it helps to do some research. Decide what’s important to you and what you can’t make compromises on. It might be a good exercise to check out all the brands you love and see whether they fit with your ethos. With this in mind, read labels and brand bios, sustainability reports and stay inquisitive. Protect your values and only shop with brands that make you feel comfortable.
Recycle
Ever felt the temptation to chuck out last year’s now uninspiring clothes? Stop! As the popular saying goes, ‘one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure’ and we couldn’t agree more. Recycle your old clothes, accessories and shoes at your local charity shop or clothing bank, and make a world of difference by avoiding landfill. You could make someone’s day with that pink shirt!
Repair
Those tired, worn-at-the-seam trousers you can’t live without don’t need to be cast aside just yet. Take them to your local tailor before buying a new pair. It’s a sure way of being kinder to your wallet, and means they’re not bound for the recycling bank yet. In need of an Edinburgh tailor? Send us an email and we’ll put you in touch with one as well as help you with any styling and sizing support you need.
